Interview With Colleen Caffeine from Choking Susan Current mood: chipper Category: Music
The Rebellion Festival in England is not only going to have some of the worlds best bands around this summer, fans will be treated to a special brand of Punk.Choking Susan's brand,Detroit's own.Unique its its personal content, and the vocal delivery of one Colleen Caffeine. Her stage presence not unlike a cheetah lazily lounging in her tree, then pouncing on her blissfully unaware lunch. The band takes a backseat to no-one and are as tight as they come with a pounding bass and drums that'll have your grandma po-go-ing half the night. Some of the tastiest punk rock leads you'll ever wanna here too.An all out visual and sonic circus. They have a cd out now called The FBI Did It and for only $8.00 ppd its a bargin, considering the amount of time it will spend in your CD player! When Choking Susan comes your way, make sure your there. You'll be in for a treat, and damn ,they are friendly folk too. So pull up a chair, grab a tea and ejoy the conversation with Colleen Caffiene

MR- Ok Colleen , I gotta start off with an off the wall one. Is there a story , or person behind the band name?
CC-The band name came from a cheesy old cheaply made porno..all good things start or finish with sex but hopefully not prematurely
MR- I hear hints of influences in your vocal style but your definatly unique. Was it a consious thing or just developed of time? CC- I'm still pretending to sing..I didn't say that outloud did i?
MR-Who are you biggest musical influences growing up? CC- Musicals? I never watched Annie! ok just once...just once everyday of my life! who told you???when the fuck is the sun going to come out , tomorrow????
MR- Choking Susan has performed with some living legends over the years, any band or person that was your biggest thrill?Any stories you can or want to share with us? CC-Ok, serious time..Nidge from Blitz ..I went all pathetically fannish when he showed us kindness, than showed us respect and asked us to cover "Warriors" for his upcoming Blitz tribute cd..he had the Distillers cover it earlier but said they didn't get the guitar right..right before his untimely death, we recorded it and he loved it! we were on top of the world to have a hero of ours that we grew up on like our music and want us to do his....it didnt get any better than that.and than to be friends with him too was incredible...Keith, the guitarist, had the Warriors logo tattooed on him right before his last performance in Detroit and was able to show him and hangout with him..I missed the show but had spoken to him on the phone that day..we will always miss Nidge..
MR-Your playing the Rebelllion fest this summer. Is that the biggest show to date you've played? CC-It's the biggest punk festival in the world

MR- is it hard playing a gig with people you've admired for years and all of a sudden your sharing the same stage? in other words do you find your self still being a fan, or is all buisness? CC-I'm only a fan...will always be just a fan..we played CBGB's before it closed and I licked the stage right before we were finished playing our set..the very stage my heroes walked on
MR-You written some really good stuff in your blog, very poetic, and stuff I can see easily becoming songs. How do Choking Susan songs come into being? CC- I get pissed off or hurt and bam, a song is born! they pretty much write themselves! luckily for me the world is a toilet and I'm in a constant flush...the band as a whole writes the music end of it
MR-You had few side projects over the years can you tell us about some of them? Are there anymore planned for the immediate future? CC- With the cleverness of the internet I was able to record with a Spanish band the Safety Pins and a solo artist from the UK , Wayne Zenith..Wayne and I made an EP and the Safety Pins and I are in the process of completing songs for an EP..the only other project I had in the works is an all female band called "The Jon Benets"
MR- Who would give your right uhmm... well who would you just love to work with if you had your pick of the litter out there today? CC- I want to be a Spice Girl...Caffeine Spice has a nice ring to it..at least I'm a flavor..
MR- Detroit has produced some dynamic bands over the years ,some "made it" some didnt.Who out there impresses you most now.... CC-Everyone on my bands top myspace friends..seriously,great stuff!
MR-I love the honesty , and freshness of not just the music on Choking Susan's last Cd but the lryics are fantastic too. Are we going to have the pleasure of hearing any new material soon? CC- why thank you!we have a few new songs ready to record..one is about Detroit ,another is called "Tie me up, Tie me down"...
MR-Whats Coleen doing for fun in Detroit these days. Sports, art, watching other bands? Does Detroit or Michigan still have a "scene"? CC-Detroit is very "clicky" but there alot of great music supporters out there..its amazing the amount of great music that comes out of dingy bars here everyweekend played to a crowd of 20 people.. colleen has no fun ! :)
MR- Are you and the band looking at any extensive tours in the US anytime this fall? CC-Theres always tour talks..Italy,Japan, California are some of the more serious ones..we'll wait to see what happens :)
MR- From my perspective you seem to have a great if not somewhat personal relationship with fans of the band.Thats really something I respect alot. What do you as an artist get from that? CC- It always pisses me off when people dont want to know their "fans"..as I said, I'm a fan...why would anyone not want to chat with those that love them? its crazy! I'm so grateful for anyone thats listened to us, liked us, come out to see us, said a good word about us or to us..we really don't have fans because they immediately become are our friends..
MR- I've asked this of everyone I've talked to here in one form or another so I cant spare you. Myspace help, or hell? CC-Help!! its opened up the world to us...anyone in a band that says its hell has an egotistical stick up their asses or they just plain suck
MR-Are you a lifer? Do you see yourself still kicking it on stage in 10, 15 or 20 years or do you think you'll move on to different things? CC-My dad said when I was 12 yrs old ,listening to the ramones and looking for blue hair dye that he can't wait til I grow out of my "punk phase"
MR- It Saturday night I got $50.00 bucks and the wife's car for night. Why do I go see Choking Susan over any other act in town that night? CC-Cause I'm your bud and you owe me an Elvis Hitler ticket! LOL..because you will be entertained and get slammed with some great music..absolutely guarenteed great time with us!
MR- For those visiting the big D from out of town where are they gonna get the best Veggie pizza? CC-my house ,of course :) Photos By Bernie and Robert Barry Francos

Having rigorously toured the 'toilet circuit' of USA and Canada since their inception some eight years ago, Detroit's old school punk exponents CHOKING SUSAN had been grateful, if also surprised recipients of an invitation to play at Europe's largest, exclusively-punk festival, namely REBELLION in Blackpool.
A warm-up gig in Camden London preceded heir appearance in Blackpool on the Thursday. Three days of partying, networking and watching other like-minded bands followed before driving north to Glasgow's 13th Note Cafe - as if in appeasement of a guilty conscience at having travelled so far for so little 'work'!
Regrettably, class Punk bands no longer frequently grace Glasgow's music venues. However with the Rebellion Festival finishing in Blackpool that evening, such bands from all over the globe were, over the next few days, fanning out across the UK and playing gigs whilst awaiting flights back home. And so it was, that Leftover Crack were also playing Glasgow that very night.... and only two blocks away at that! This, combined with many Glasgow punks still to return home from Rebellion themselves, resulted in a lower-than-expected crowd for the show, which turned out to be the best I have seen in 2007.
In true punk / rock'n' roll style, CHOKING SUSAN arrived at the venue several hours later than planned (due to unavoidable roadworks on the motorway.) In fact, the first of the three support bands were already on stage as the Detroit quartet arrived!
Yet even without the benefit of a sound-check, CHOKING SUSAN ripped through a storming fifteen-song set. The backing provided by Keith (guitar), Joe (bass) and Bob (drums) was as tight as a Yorkshire man before payday but undoubtedly the focul point of the band, with her purple hair and leopard-spot tattoos was vocalist Colleen Caffeine whose energy was quickly transmitted to the audience. Her on-stage persona swung between sexy and sesuous to viscious and snarling within a heartbeat as she prowled, danced and paced across every inch of available floor space.
Colleen writes the lyrics to all the songs - lyrics that reflect an upbeat sense of fun as well as her vitriolic opinions on everything 'false' from 'new punk' to breast enhancements(!) and whilst the musical style may be regarded as 'old school' the delivery is as individualistic as it is exciting and entertaining.
With the prospect of a recording deal in the near future, and having received so much positive feedback from their three dates in the UK, CHOKING SUSAN are hoping for a quick return to these shores. (They have already been invited back to Rebellion next year) If high tempo, fist clenching melodic punk music with heavy-hooked choruses is your bag, then you would do well to check them out.
Whether a fan of 'punk' or not, I defy anyone not to feel the urge to party when in the company of this hugely under-rated band!

So what criteria must a band fulfill to legitimately claim 'cult' status? Must the band / key member(s) now be singing with The Choir Invisible? Must they be better known for off-stage anti-social antics than for their music? Must they have been a high impact / short lifespan band? I pose the question because the words 'cult band' just sit so naturally when prefixing the words 'CHOKING SUSAN'.........
....and yet Detroit's finest tick none of the boxes against any of the afore-mentioned standards. Qualification for use of the term however, comes courtesy of the fact that CHOKING SUSAN have had (and continue to grow) a hard core - as opposed to hardcore - following since their formation in 1999. They have also remained true to their musical roots and routes, by refusing to divert the tour bus down the overcrowded minor road to Commercial Highway, and consistently refuel with Regular Punk, and not the newer, (supposedly) environmentally and radio- friendly Super Emo and New Punk.
They recently (August 2007) undertook their first overseas gigs, courtesy of an unexpected but most welcome invitation to play at the UK's REBELLION Punk Festival in Blackpool. A warm-up show in London and a subsequent date in Glasgow were also pencilled into the itinerary, and it was at the latter where LOUD HORIZON MUSIC finally caught up with the band. (Read a brief review of the gig itself within the GIG REVIEW section)

"I'm not going to ask again! Finish your drinks and move outside NOW or I'll take them off you...!!!"
The growled message from the barmaid was succinct enough, and to be fair, it was gone midnight and she had made the request a couple of times previously. We moved outside. WELCOME TO GLASGOW!
Fortunately, the rain had abated and the temperature was mild, so whilst Keith (guitar), Joe (bass), Bob (drums) and the remainder of CHOKING SUSAN's entourage loaded up the 'tourbus' (!) - see below - vocalist Colleen Caffeine had the ready- made excuse for not heaving equipment as she chatted freely and at length about the band.
Yup! - The 'tourbus'! How rock and roll is that....?
"The invitation to play REBELLION came completely out of the blue" affirmed Colleen. "We made no approach at all" she explained, seeking confirmation from her industrious band-mates. "We played on The Arena stage in Blackpool, which is a long and narrow auditorium and I think the sound quality was the best of all the stages. Sure.... we had an early slot on the first day, but the crowd reaction was awesome, and were immediately asked back next year by the organisers." (Colleen tried so hard to curb a warm smile of pride, but failed miserably! ) "But the good thing about playing so early over the weekend is that we then had time to relax and watch some inspiring bands ourselves. Like Eddie & The Hot Rods. Like Holy Racket. Like Texas Terri" - who Colleen was frequently mistaken for! "Los Fastidios from Italy were fantastic" interjected Keith, an opinion endorsed by Bob. "And who can fail to enjoy the Subhumans?" (The phrase 'kids in a sweetie shop sprung to mind.)
"And" Colleen continued excitedly, "you know the UK is awesome! Everyone we've met has been super-nice, I can't tell you! So welcoming ." Pressed on any perceived differences between UK and US audiences, Colleen called on the opinion of Joe, who was fighting a losing battle with the 'tourbus' roof-rack. "American audiences in general are more inclined to merely accept what music is put before them by Radio and other media. UK crowds seem to be more open to, you know, sort of 'experiment' and embrace whatever is maybe not recognised as the 'norm".
As a rule CHOKING SUSAN aim to play at least two gigs a month, one being in the immediate Detroit area and one further afield. Should there be much travelling involved, they will of course incorporate some additional shows along the route. Two of the band have jobs - we won't say which ones in case the IRS are reading this (!?) - so careful scheduling is required. They have covered most of The States with the exception of California and Canada has been visited several times, and although they haven't toured as such with any particular band, they cite playing with BLITZ and also THE VIBRATORS as being the best shows...............so far! (Both bands took time out with CHOKING SUSAN, imparting advice and generally just being good mates. Perhaps the warmth and appreciation they received is what makes they themselves such an affable bunch.)
There have been several changes to the band's composition over the years, with Colleen and Keith being the only two remaining original members. There have been name changes too. Colleen explains:
'The name CHOKING SUSAN comes from the name of a porno movie. You've seen it...?! After a while we decided to change the name to CRAP. That was really short-lived though, and we then decided to call ourselves DOUG'S DEAD EYE, which was a kind of perverse hommage to an ex boyfriend of mine. Although we recorded under the latter name, it again was a short-lived incarnation, and we soon reverted to the original and best, CHOKING SUSAN. Why? Because it RAWKS, baby!!!"

Having such a tight-knit band of local followers during that period meant that the name changes had no real detrimental effect on the band's ability to pull a crowd. Indeed, through the medium of My Space and other social networking sites, the momentum continues to build. " I know sites like this have their detractors and there is an awful lot of crap flying around the ether, but to be honest it's really worked in our favour. Blackpool - in fact even most of the gigs we play back home - would just not happen if it weren't for My Space. TONIGHT wouldn't have happened! And also, all those 'friends' we've made on our My Space page suddenly take a real 3D form when we get out on our travels and meet them properly. Hell - even when we're so many thousand miles from home here in Glasgow, so many people that we 'know' have turned up to introduce themselves in person. That's just SO good!" It was quite obvious that Colleen was genuinely grateful, and was appreciative of the influence that My Space etc can have on a band's development.
There's no arguing that with her vibrant (presently) purple hair, her leopard-spot tattoos and her constant dancing / pacing / prowling and bouncing throughout the set, Colleen is the main focul point for the audience throughout a show. However, she is at pains to ensure CHOKING SUSAN are not viewed as merely an extension of her ego (I'd be most surprised if she is at all egotistical), and is determined that her band-mates get the credit they deserve.

"Musically, we all contribute. We all write the music, either individually or collectively. As a band we come together as a whole. " Interestingly, though it is Colleen who exclusively writes the lyrics to all the songs. Which really begs the question: 'WILL THE REAL COLLEEN CAFFEINE PLEASE STAND UP?'
CHOKING SUSAN's catalogue of songs evidence a delicate balance between: 'nerdy fun-punk' (refer - 'YOU'RE SO PRETTY, which includes the lines: 'Girls go to college to gain more knowledge. Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider'); venomous disgust and vitriolic opinion (refer - SILICONE CHEST and PUNK ROCKER) and personal torment and even self-loathing (refer - LIVING DEAD DOLL; ANOREXIA and SALVATION ARMY)
"Yep! That's me! Its all come from me! I am exactly who you see.... who you read. That's me in the 'real world' too. I gotta get my aggression out!"
But the self - doubt? The insecurity? This was not an insecure young woman talking, surely?
"Yeah! I'm completely insecure. Sure I am. But you know what? I also just don't care! That's where the complex part comes in. My God! You're the first interviewer I've given a straight answer to... normally I ask like: '... you looking at my butt?"
(Well..............???!!!)
Although the band concede to 'doing alright' with their DIY attitude towards their calling, there IS muted talk of a record deal in the offing. From the perspective of both an informed / progressive label AND the band, this must surely be considered the next step. CHOKING SUSAN will undoubtedly sell shit-loads of records, but this will in no way affect their 'CULT' status..................................just look at The Ramones!!
__________________________________________________________________________
(My thanx to Colleen for taking the time out to talk to LOUD HORIZON MUSIC. Also to Joe, Keith and Bob (and Amy) with whom I chatted throughout the evening, but were busy balancing and counter-balancing guitars and drum kits onto the roof of their magnificent 'tour-bus' during the interview. THAT'S ROCKAND ROLL, GUYS! THAT'S WHAT 'CULT' BANDS ARE ALL ABOUT!!)

CD Review
By Lucky (SugarBuzz Hollywood Hellion)
SugarBuzz Magazine
Choking Susan is a Detroit based punk rock band that is totally worth a listen. The band has generated quite a following with live shows and a great f**king CD demo entitled "Louder & Harder". The band consists of Colleen Caffeine on vocals, Killer Keith on guitar, Lower GI Joe thumping bass, and Marco Polo on skins.
The band lists influences like Ramones, Johnny Thunders, The Jam, Stiv Bators, and UK Subs to name a few. Needless to say this combination can only lead to volatile combustion.
Like a 120-watt jolt, "Falling Round and Round" shocks you with some jerky pop punk. Some crazy ass lyrics paint the picture of a guy wearing girl's underwear and looking pretty as he can, a tough girl who hates big fat curls, and other weird shit. Colleen's vocals are sexy innocent but don't let that fool you. This is one bad girl! Some awesome Keith Moon like drum fills at no extra charge. Ruff Stuff!
Some fierce charging guitar via Killer Keith opens "Gone Astray". A straight ahead punker, this song appeals on many levels. Punkers, rockers, dweebs, Speedo's and righteous dudes are gonna love it. Tough as a pit bull.
"I'm Alone" slams it's way to your heart. The fiercest of the four, we find Colleen lamenting about her solitude. So sad! Chunky all around and helter skelter vocals keep this charger on track.
Tribal drumming and some bass bitch slapping sweep you of your feet on "Baby Doll". This song smashes down on you. Also for some unexplained reason I feel myself getting a little horny listening to this number. What's that all about? Maybe I have a penchant for wind up toys and undressing and caressing girls. Listen and see if you have the same reaction.
Yet another demo that has left me desiring more and more. Can't wait for a full length www.chokingsusan.com |

Choking Susan Review by Suzee from Primative Derelect Volcanic Promotions
Choking Susan is a submissive wet dreams line-up with a touch of aggressive sexual nature. What more do you want for a kick ass punk band lead by Colleen the beautifully, absurd sex goddess by birthright. I'm Alone, it seizes your attention with a tweak of the Ramones abandonment, undying, lyrics. Baby Doll's obeying, complying intention provokes the listener to want to let go and just get f**ked! The lyrics like, "I like to be controlled". And "I just do what I'm told, Baby Doll, Baby Doll I want to be a Baby Doll". Love it, a sexified punk song. As for Falling round and round is such a riot grrl punk song with the imagery of a crossdressing man and his way tough girl! An extremely fun rocking time. Punker is a staple to every punk poser you love to hate. It's an anthem for all the punk posers we'd like to smash their face in! Any true punk rocker will admire the attempt at hating the fake punk bands that are being mass produced. I noticed the unrequited love that kills us all for a split minute. The humanity of emotion that we desire more out of people. Basically reminds me of PJ Harvey's songs of the longing of love but with a punk, I don't give a f**k attitude. Needless to say the collaboration of songs I heard is exceptionally, insanely great!
My overall evaluation, observation of Choking Susan is ardently, socially outcasted with flare. But what true punk band isn't a volcanic derelict! A must listen to especially if you love punk and sexy frontwomen! Just have an amazing, vivacious time when you listen to this and pop in a porn. Oh, I'm sorry but they are on a porn soundtrack how f**king ironic. Choking Susan is worth the time and energy to listen to. Grrls in skirts who rock are my fetish. If it's also yours check them out. It won't be a waste of time just energy as you get worked up. Let yourself go and rock it!!!

For A Good Time, Call Choking Susan!
W ELCOME TO Michigan Rocks. This month I had every intention of going back to my usual practice of review-ing CDs in my column. But after seeing Choking Susan in concert a few weeks ago, I guess you could say I was inspired. And, in the spirit of Leslie Gore who sang "It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to..." – this is my column and I’ll write about what I want.
With a little help from my friend Rob Bawol who took the photos, I’ve decided to share the Choking Susan experience with you.
I became a fan of Choking Susan a couple of years back after picking up their very first, self-titled CD. I can’t explain exactly what it was that drew me to the band. I guess it was a combination of things.
First, it was their irreverent style of punk rock. Having always been a "guitar player" fan, I was impressed with Keith’s guitar playing (a veteran of the punk bands Crash 94 and Misled Youth).

Then of course there’s Colleen, a blonde bombshell who is the band’s lead singer and principle songwriter.
Whatever the reason, I became an instant fan and have followed the band through several name changes (Choking Susan to Crap to Doug’s Dead Eye and back to Choking Susan) and subsequent CD releases.
On September 12, 2003 the band invited me to check out their live show. They had been booked as the opening band at the New Way Bar in Ferndale as part of The Impaler’s month-long 402nd birthday celebration.
There was pretty much a full house that night, with a good portion of the crowd coming to see Choking Susan. I know this because most of the audience were wearing black, custom designed Choking Susan T-shirts, with a variety of quotes on them. I have one that says "I slept with Choking Susan" which my lovely wife is none too happy about.
Band members Keith, Jose and Ken took the stage around 10:45 pm, and warmed up with an instrumental version of a Door’s song. When the guys ripped into their version of Bob Dylan’s "Like A Rollin’ Stone," Colleen hit the stage wearing a pastel pink micro-mini skirt, a silver tiara on her head, a skin-tight white vest that said "R.I.P. Jack Tripper," and matching pink and white platform shoes.
Whatever it is that makes a performer stand out from the crowd, Colleen has it. And it’s not just the clothes or that fact that she’s a sexy blonde – great looking singers are a dime a dozen these days. The fact is Colleen is a natural-born entertainer, a virtual dynamo, a punk rock chanteuse. She’s a combination of naughty and nice, of the sacred and the profane. A mixture of the bawdi- ness of Mae West, a blonde Betty Boop, a punked up Madonna with the zaniness of a young Goldie Hawn.
Colleen rarely stands still, she’s all over the stage, sometimes lying on the ground and often among the crowd flirting with whomever she damn well pleases. As the saying goes "When she’s good, she’s very good and when she’s bad...she’s better."
After the opening song, the band tore into "Silicone Chest" taken from their first CD. A tongue-in-cheek protest song about the vanity of breast enlargement, it seemed to be a crowd favorite. Colleen had the men smiling and the women laughing as she squeezed her own breasts and sang the lyrics "more than a mouthful is a waste, I can see my toes and my waist."
Next up was "Bullet In The Brain," one of my favorites taken from their third CD, YOU CAN TAKE THE TRASH OUT OF THE TRAILER, BUT YOU CAN’T TAKE THE TRAILER OUT OF THE TRASH. Led by Keith’s searing guitar, it gave the band the chance to show off their ability to really crank out some tough-as-nails hard rock.
Their cover of The Knack’s "Good Girls Don’t" was another crowd favorite, as Colleen came into the audience and personally serenaded some lucky bastard while sitting on his lap.
Then they launched into the "Brady Song," another original taken from their third CD. It’s a twisted little punk tale about the ‘70s TV show The Brady Bunch, complete with the show’s chorus with the lyrics just slightly changed.
The band introduced three brand new songs, "Small Pox," "Punker," and "Salvation Army" from their hot new EP that was just released. One of these songs will be appearing on the German based Wolverine Records compilation of female/female-fronted punk bands. My vote goes for "Salvation Army," but I have to admit I love it when Colleen growls on "Small Pox."
Two other cool covers were "Great Big Kiss" by Johnny Thunders and the Talking Heads’ "Psycho Killer." They closed the show (much too soon for me) with "Peter Frampton Has AIDS," from their first CD. It’s one of those songs that you have to hear to really believe.
Choking Susan put on a terrific show, and they are just a barrel of fun. In the immortal words of Mae West, "Too much of a good thing... can be wonderful" and Choking Susan is exactly that. I can see it now on bathroom walls all over suburban Detroit – "For a good time...call Choking Susan." And they deliver! ¢

| CHOKING SUSAN
Choking Susan
I F YOU haven’t noticed by now, Choking Susan is one of my favorite bands. Fronted by the sexy Colleen Caffeine and driven by Keith’s searing guitar attack, Choking Susan is kicking ass and taking names as they continue to win new fans and prove themselves a band to be reckoned with.
Their latest release is a three-song EP/demo recorded for the German-based Wolverine Records, with one of the songs slotted to appear on a European compilation of female/female fronted punk bands.
"Small Pox" is in response to the terrorist threat hanging over us since the 9/11 attack, with Colleen’s lyrics coming from the perspective of someone who has been infected. "Punker" is a shot at the punk rock scene and the poseurs who have jumped on the bandwagon just to cash in. And "Salvation Army" is Colleen taking a shot at herself and her own insecurities when she sings "I’m your clearance sale, your rebate check, I’m half-priced off..."
The CD was recorded at Bombastic Sounds in Madison Heights, and the end result is great music that’s always fun to listen to. I should also mention that the CD is free to anyone who e-mails the band and asks for a copy. For more info go to www.chokingsusan.com. ¢ |

Mark Clark interview with us
|
|
No Trash In This Trailer!"

Choking Susan
By Mark Clark
C HOKING SUSAN is a Detroit-based punk band featuring the always alluring Colleen Caffeine, the band’s principle songwriter. After several failed attempts to meet for an interview, we decided to talk via the e-mail. Enjoy.
You and Keith are the two original members of the band. Tell me how you got started.
I wanted to start a band, and I saw this guy in a bar who looked like Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith. I went up to him and said, "We have to get a band going." He was a drummer and looking also, so we put out the call via the newspapers, fliers and just word of mouth to get this lineup that we have today. There are loads of different "personalities" we had to go through to get this lineup that we have now.
We have Ken W. Bush on the drums, Killer Keith 2 Dope on the guitar, Jose’ Can U See on the bass and me, Colleen Caffeine, on vocals.
Who are the band’s influences?
Our influences include The Ramones, X, Johnny Thunders, Minor Threat, Kiss, Peter and the Test Tube Babies and a whole bunch of others. I think that when you are a kid growing up, have no money and nothing to do, you are influenced a lot by music. My older friends would bring over tapes when I was too young to do anything and I would just listen to these bands over and over again. I would get almost obsessed by their music, messages and the freedom to express whatever the hell they wanted.
Music can change the world by changing individual lives. That is what inspired me to get into music. It inspires you to be yourself and to think for yourself. Music is brain food!
Great answer! Choking Susan has obviously been through several personnel changes the past few years. You have also changed your name from Choking Susan to Crap to Doug’s Dead Eye and now back to Choking Susan – my personal favorite – again. Why all the name changes and how did you come up with the name Choking Susan in the first place? Also, who writes most of the songs?
We changed our name to reflect the different personalities in the band. Interpret that as you may! Choking Susan is taken from an old porno movie.
As far as the songs, I Colleen write all the lyrics, and the basic melody (guitar lines) are written by Keith. I hate to say that one person writes them because they wouldn’t be anything without everyone putting their part in. So, to answer your question, they are a cumulative band effort!
Do you watch porn or are you a fan of porn? That might explain some of the song titles from the first CD. I know "Silicone Chest" was an anti-silicone song, right? And I thought "I Wanna’ Be An Addict" was actually a punk rock love song, sorta’ like the punk rock response to Robert Palmer’s "Addicted To Love." But what about "Lesbian Love Song," "Crossed Dressed" and "Smeared Lipstick?" And why pick on poor old Peter Frampton?
Peter Frampton!? Have you seen him lately? He did not age well. All of those long luscious blonde curls replaced by a balding grey head. So long Sgt. Pepper!
An original band member told us about the porno "Choking Susan," and told me he was in the movie. I haven’t seen that or any others in fear that I might see him naked!
As for "Lesbian Love Song," I feel the lesbians haven’t had a love song written directly for them. Melissa Etheridge writes them ambiguously.
"Crossed Dressed" is the same way. We are trying to expand our following to include more lesbians and transvestites!
"Smeared Lipstick" happened after one of those mornings where you wake up, don’t know where you are, who you are with, and yesterday’s makeup is all over the place. You know those days, Mark – when your body is keeping secrets from your memory...
"Addict" was written in response to all the artists who become addicted to poison. I read somewhere the lead singer of Sublime wanted to become addicted to heroin to lead a more authentic "rock star" life. How "brilliant" is that? Addict yourself to love or cornflakes instead. The first line of our song is "I want a pill that makes me stupid..." I think that about sums it up.
"Silicone Chest" asked the age-old question "is bigger better even if they are fake?" You tell me Mark, you are a man...
Where did you record the first CD and did you produce it yourselves?
We’ve recorded and produced all three of the CDs ourselves. We have our own in-home studio, and Keith does all the mixing.
Just one last comment regarding the first CD: My favorite song is "I Wanna’ Be An Addict," because I loved the verse "I want a pill that’ll make me love you despite your ugly face." The second CD was released as Doug’s Dead Eye. I liked the cool punk cover of Cat Stevens’s song "Wild World." That was your response to 9/11, right? What’s your favorite song from the project? The song "Anorexia" has a line that goes, "You can never be too thin or too pretty." Were you ever made to feel that way? And lastly, what about the naked women on the CD cover?
I’m glad you liked "Addict." About that one line, there have been many times I wish I would have liked the sweet, not-so-good-looking boy who probably would have been better for me than the Bad Boy type I’ve always been attracted to.
Now as far as the second CD. I liked a lot of the songs from that one. That CD has a different feel than our other ones because of the influence of two band members who are gone and in a different band now. Out of respect to them, we don’t perform a couple of songs from that CD, including "Schwantz."
My favorite is "Wild World." It was written in response to 9/11. If you are in a band, how can you not write a song about that horrific day? I thought that song would work really well by taking Cat Stevens’ chorus and adding our own verses to honor the victims.
I pulled "Anorexia" out of the bowels of my own bulimia belly. I have had an eating disorder since my teens. You almost have to, being a woman in this society. We are not living in the Ruebenesque period that glorified curves. I don’t think I have ever met a woman who doesn’t want to lose a few pounds. That song has the drive you feel compelling you to eat or the deprivation you feel starving yourself to the point of your hair falling out.
The bathing beauties on the cover grabbed your attention, right?
Ah yes, the bathing beauties did grab my attention! Like I said when I reviewed the CD, maybe next time you’ll be gracing the cover in such a way. Let’s talk about the new CD. The new line-up sounds great. I’ve always thought that Keith was a great guitar player and now Choking Susan finally has a couple of players who can keep up with him, if you know what I mean. And the songs are stronger. I loved the two covers that you did. Bob Dylan’s song turned punk ("Like A Rollin’ Stone") is sort of a surprise, and your version of "California Sun" totally rocks! I did notice that you turned down the raunch on this CD, with the exception of "On The Rag." My favorites are "Bullet In The Brain," "Sick In The Head" and, of course, "California Sun." What are your favorites and why? And what about the "Brady Song?"
Thanks for the compliments, Mark. I think Keith is an awesome guitar player. He’s the best one I know. We are also lucky to have Jose’ Can U See on the bass, as well Ken W. Bush on drums. There is no doubt that in this band I am the weakest link. They are really, really good musicians.
With the new CD, "On The Rag" has enough raunch to cover the entire recording. Where else but high school health class can you hear so clearly about menstruation?
Aside from that song, our other tunes would fair well at any major easy listening station – just kidding! I don’t think we ever try to shock. Not really much can shock anymore. The irony, madness, humor and non-conformity just came naturally to us.
My favorite song to perform from the new CD has to be "Like A Rollin’ Stone." People recognize it instantly even though it is so far removed from its original intention. Do you think that hippie Bob Dylan would like his song jacked up times ten?
As for the Brady song, so many generations grew up or are growing up to the Brady Bunch... "I wanna be your gay Mike Brady, I’ll kiss my wife Carol and dream of my son Greg.... yeah yeah yeah, Johnny Bravo."
Yeah, "On The Rag" did have enough raunch to cover the entire album! And I forgot about that line in the "Brady Song." You said "the irony, madness, humor and non-conformity just comes naturally to you." In my review of the CD in March’s column I said that Choking Susan couldn’t seem to "fight the punk that’s in themselves," which is basically the same thing you said. The web site is up and running and looks great. I’m assuming the CD will be available through the web site, right? Any last comments about you or the band?
The new CD is available, along with our vintage other two through the web site. Just go to www.choking susan.com or e-mail me at chokingsusan@aol.com. We will also have T-shirts, which are hand- painted by me, personally available very soon through the web site.
I would like to thank everyone who continues to support us and comes to the shows. I would also like to say to anyone that will be reading this, that Detroit is a wealth of great music. We have played with some awesome bands like Red September, Working Class Jacks, The Riots, Broadzilla, Trash Brats, Dead Heroes, Down Doggy and scores of others. It is amazing the amount of talent around here. And to all of my punk friends – "BITE ME!"
Did I kiss enough ass? ¢
